Our Research

Our research seeks to understand how sociobiodiversity value chains can contribute to inclusive and sustainable bioeconomies in the Brazilian Amazon.

Sociobiodiversity value chains are production and commercialization arrangements developed by local producers that promote conservation and restoration of native vegetation.

Based on local knowledge and agency of smallholders, these value chains contribute to the regional economy and provide income and employment to rural and urban populations. These value chains also produce whole and healthy foods, while fostering alternative ways of relating to nature.

However, these value chains face significant challenges in value-aggregation and market access which are proportional to the distance these products travel from their place of production to the hands of consumers.

Between 2023 and 2027, our project addresses these questions of how to co-produce transdisciplinary scientific research in partnership with civil society and local communities. Our collective goal is to build a sociobioeconomy in the Amazon that is led by and benefits the local actors who are often invisibilized.
