Established in 2010, Cacauway is the only fine chocolate factory operated by small farmers along the Transamazon Highway in Xingu territory, Pará. Owned by COOPATRANS, a cooperative of approximately 40 small-scale cacao farmers in Medicilândia, the factory specializes in producing high-quality chocolate and cocoa derivatives. Cacauway also engages indigenous and other rural communities beyond the cooperative. Currently, their products are sold in 13 Cacauway stores across Brazil, with an expanding market for fermented cocoa almonds supplied to bean-to-bar chocolate producers in the country. In November 2023, a seminar was held to explore challenges and opportunities for value-added production in the Transamazon region. Additionally, between March and August 2024, Cacauway partnered with the LINKAGES academic staff to conduct a study on the region’s cocoa value chains.
